Welcome to MoonVote: The First Tokenized Lemmy Instance
MoonVote is a new kind of social platform where your voice has real, on-chain weight. Built as a fork of Lemmy (the open-source federated Reddit alternative), MoonVote integrates the community-owned MOON token on Arbitrum One directly into the social experience. Every post, every upvote, every interaction can carry real value — not controlled by a corporation, but by the community itself.
Why MoonVote Exists
When Reddit shut down Community Points in 2023, the r/CryptoCurrency community lost its native social token integration overnight. We tried to make it work in one way or another for a while, and they will likely continue to be used as governance and tipping tokens there, but the native integration has been gone since Reddit sunset. MOONs still exist on Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova (Nova maybe ded soon tho…) — over 80 million tokens held by thousands of community members — but they lost their home. MoonVote gives them one. This is a sovereign platform: fully open source (AGPL-3.0), federated with the broader Lemmy network, and governed by the people who use it.
How It Works
Creating a post burns 1 MOON — a small commitment that signals you have skin in the game and helps prevent spam. Later this 1 MOON price will be set by governance, either to a dollar amount or possibly other mechanism. Tipping is opt-in: when you upvote content you appreciate, you can choose to send MOON directly to the creator. No middleman, no platform cut. Everything is settled on Arbitrum One where gas fees are fractions of a cent. You sign in with your Ethereum wallet — no passwords, no email, no personal data required.
Smart Accounts and Session Keys
We’re rolling out ERC-4337 smart account support, which means you can deploy a smart wallet and enable session keys. Once activated, your session key handles signing for 24 hours — no wallet popup every time you post or tip. It’s the UX of Web2 with the ownership guarantees of Web3. Your EOA remains the ultimate owner and you can revoke session keys at any time.
Federation
MoonVote federates with the entire Lemmy network. You can subscribe to communities on lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, or any other Lemmy instance and see their posts right here in your feed. Remote users see MoonVote as a standard Lemmy instance — the blockchain features are local enhancements, not barriers. One platform, two worlds: tokenized social for crypto natives, familiar Reddit-style forums for everyone else.
What’s Next
This is day one. We’re building in public and everything is on GitHub. Governance dashboards, Snapshot voting integration, community-driven tokenomics adjustments, and more are on the roadmap. If you hold MOONs, this is your platform. If you’re curious about tokenized social media, welcome aboard. Connect your wallet, join the conversation, and let’s see what a community-owned forum can become.
